TEN

JETT

I was concerned.

“Where are we going? Please tell me there aren’t going to be any more murder birds.”

Gage laughed. “No murder birds. I promise.”

“I’m not sure I believe you.” Since Gage was behind the wheel and again refused to tell me where we were going, I was very concerned.

Two security agents followed us in a separate car as we drove down some empty backroad with nothing but fields, trees, and the occasional farm out in the distance. Lampposts were few and far between, and the cell service was pretty shit.

“I’m going to get murdered,” I said confidently. “This is where it ends. In a cow field. In Florida. In the middle of nowhere. Tell my story. Oh, wait. You’ll probably be arrested. They always suspect the boyfriend. Don’t let Albie tell my story, he’ll just make it weird. Why are we slowing down?” Now I was very concerned. I turned in my seat. “Don’t stop the car. I don’t want to end up on Dateline.”

“Sorry,” Gage said quickly, hitting the accelerator.

The car lunged forward, and I was slammed back against the seat by my seatbelt.

“Holy hell! Are we being chased by Pennywise?”

“Don’t say that! You know how much he freaks me out!”

“Why else would you be driving like you’re in a Fast and Furious movie, Gage? This is a Toyota!”

“Why are you shouting?” Gage asked, sounding far calmer than I felt.

“I don’t know!” I cleared my throat. “What was that?”

He pursed his lips and shook his head. “What was what?”

It was something, and he knew it. I racked my brain, trying to figure out what I could have said to cause him to suddenly channel his inner Jason Statham. Was it the cow field? My murder? Oh. Shit.

“I called you my boyfriend,” I said, studying his face.

“What? Pfft. No? Why would that change anything?”

“Why is your voice so high?”

“I think the air conditioner is drying my throat out,” he gasped. “I’m good.”

Right. Of course, it was the car’s air conditioner and not my being an insensitive asshole. “Sorry, it just slipped out. You know, um, because of our history. Didn’t mean to freak you out.” Wow. Now, who was lying? Even I didn’t believe me. And now you made things weird. Way to go, Jett. “So, um, can you give me a hint of where we’re going?” I asked, hoping to ease the tension a bit.

As desperate as I was to know why Gage had gotten weird when I called him my boyfriend, it wasn’t the kind of conversation I wanted to get into in this particular setting. I needed to keep my wits about me should we get ambushed by a rogue cow or chainsaw wielding backwoods killer.

“Nope.”

So much for that. It felt like we’d been driving for hours, but I knew it hadn’t been that long.

“How did your talk with Skip go?” Had that sounded nonchalant? I’d been going for casual. I might have been a little jealous when he’d told me he’d made plans to meet up with his former fiancé earlier this afternoon.
